An Open Letter to
the Plain Dealer Theater Critic

Dear Ms. X,
May
we at Guerrilla Theater Company be the first to say "Congratulations!"
in regards to your article of Jan. 29th ("Here's what new 'Onstage'
categories mean") in The Plain Dealer. A wonderful thing is happening
in Cleveland. The formation of new theater organizations and the reinvention
of more established theaters in Cleveland is a sign of social awareness
and artistic vitality. As a member of the media you are an integral
part of our survival by keeping the public abreast of what's going on
and keeping us on our toes with your ever vigilant and (if I may be
redundant) critical eye. So as our roles and missions expand and diversify,
it is essential that the way our work is described and presented change
along with them. This change honors us both. We believe Cleveland has
the possibility of being a great theater town, on par with Chicago.
As that time comes ever nearer, we must rise to the occasion, and respect
each other accordingly. Your article is the first great declaration
that Cleveland is taking itself seriously as the theatrical Mecca it
is becoming. Again, our plentiful thanks and heartiest congratulations.
We would also like to
take this opportunity to say that we have indeed missed your presence
at any of our performances. You are, no doubt, a very busy individual,
and your postponement serves only to let us know you have faith in our
mission, and that you knew we'd be around for a while. We have not let
you down. Our shows have been sold out the last few weekends, and it's
a trend we hope we'll continue. So please accept these complimentary
passes (which we finally got printed) and remember to call the evening
you plan on attending so we can hold the seats for you. We look forward
to hearing from you. Once more, bravo!
Sincerely,
Tower
