THE EVOLUTION OF THE MIND

by Torque

Our current show, 'Mind Your Own Business', has been evolving since its birth in the Fall of '93. Recently we've been promoting the show as 'the only alternative theater in Cleveland', and until recently I thought that was funny. I looked up the word 'alternative' in the dictionary, and Webster's third definition reads: "3. something remaining to be chosen". So I stopped laughing. There isn't a theater in this area that's doing anything yet undone for the past twenty years. There are theaters that offer an alternative to mainstream theater, but this anti-mainstream theater has, over the past twenty years, become its own boring institution. I always had a feeling that we were different from all the other kids in class, but it never struck me that what we're doing might be original.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have a tragic flaw. I refuse to believe any idea I think of or contribute to can possibly be original. Either: "oh, this idea came from that...", or, "that looks just like this other thing...". But when I stopped laughing at the phrase 'the only alternative theater in Cleveland', I was suddenly struck with the utter originality of this project. Who does what we do? No one that I know of.

Our 'Mind Your Own Business' game board, dice and menu of scenes we call Hits are bringing audiences to such praises as: "...the most unique event in Cleveland's night-life", and "You are the hippest thing happening around!".

In a city of theatrical institution, 'Mind Your Own Business' has certainly evolved into Cleveland's only true Alternative.
